While in Spain, I was fortunate to take three classes. A Spanish art course, culture course and a grammar, review course. As I mentioned before, culture was my favorite course although my art course was very interesting. My culture course taught me about Spain's diverse geography, complex history, unique values and customs, steeped in tradition religion, tasteful foods, strong tradition as well as the popularity of bullfighting. The Spanish art course I took taught me about the famous artists from Spain and their different styles of artwork. I learned how to decipher the meaning behind the images of artwork and how to create a theory, or story based on the different techniques and styles used by the artists. I enjoyed my classes a lot and learned even more than I thought I was going to. In between classes I would take time to look over the notes I took, otherwise I would find different cafes to study at and try different foods and coffee. I valued the time I had in between classes and have many memories of the different places I visited while waiting for my next class to start. Below I explain the different courses I took while in Spain and how each have helped me to grow as an individual.
Unique Wall Painting
Spain's History, Culture and Art
While in Spain, I was able to visit a plethora of different museums, cathedraws, historical buildings and monuments as well as shops.
Each had their own unique style which was shown and explained by our groups' tour guides. Numerous cities were visited throughout
Spain and the more I saw, the more I began to love the history, culture and art of Spain more and more. Before the trip, I was never interested by the subject or topic of history, but because I visited Spain, I had a stronger respect for it. I never knew how strong of an impact history can have on one's culture, specifically Spain's culture and art. It is seen everywhere throughout the cities of Spain.
During my study abroad trip I was able to take some wonderful classes. All entailed history, culture and art in some way or form. I spent a lot of time in the classroom and because of it, I noticed after the trip, more of my vivid or stronger memories of Spain were when I was learning about its history, culture and art. While in art class, I learned a great deal about the unique styles and techniques used by different artists. I also learned the amount of time necessary to complete some of the artists' works. After returning from Spain, I noticed I had gained an appreciation as well as a stronger interest of the arts. All of my friends back home are artists, and I found myself taking the extra time and energy to support their passion and/or hobby; I have a close friend who makes art for a living, and I try to support her by purchasing some of her different artworks.
Culture is by far one of my favorite topics of interest, especially the culture of Spain. Before the trip, I can remember taking a few classes that touched-on or mentioned the culture of Spain, but not many and not in great detail. I took a culture course in Spain and remember loving it. The culture of Spain is incredibly different from the culture of the United States. I took interest, specifically, in the everyday life or routine of the Spaniards. What I truley liked about Spain's culture is that everyone is incredibly laid back. People are not rushing like those in the U.S. and the people can be very welcoming. Knowing and understanding the different, but unique culture made me want to live in Europe or a place similar to it. I am happy to say that my future homestay in Hawaii definately has that laid back, no-rush environment that I've always liked. The locals are very welcoming, or so I hear, and always have a smile on their face. This is the type of environment or culture I know I long for, and it's because I visited Spain.
